Middleton Lodge Wedding Videographer // Glesni & Scott
As a Yorkshire wedding videographer, I love filming at Middleton Lodge Estate. It is one of the finest luxury wedding venues in North Yorkshire. Set within 200 acres of beautiful countryside near Richmond, it is the perfect setting for couples planning a high end wedding celebration.
Glesni and Scott chose Middleton Lodge Estate for its elegant interiors, beautiful gardens and incredible light. It is the perfect venue to create natural, cinematic wedding films. My style of documentary wedding videography is well suited to the estate, as it is large enough for me to blend into the background, while the luxurious interiors and large windows offer beautiful lighting options. I can frame shots that feel cinematic and luxurious without staging moments, allowing the wedding day to flow naturally.
THE WEDDING DAY AT MIDDLETON LODGE
Glesni and her bridesmaids enjoyed a relaxed morning with plenty of champagne flowing as hair and make up got underway. Over in the Main House, Scott and his groomsmen spent the morning in the library and snooker room. The atmosphere throughout the estate was calm, warm and full of excitement.
Before the ceremony, Glesni returned to the Main House to put on her wedding dress. The ceremony took place in the beautiful Fig House and Walled Garden, and it was clear from the very first moment that this was going to be a joyful celebration. As Glesni and Scott shared their first kiss as husband and wife, one of the loudest cheers I have ever heard filled the room.
DANCING, COCKTAILS AND FIREWORKS
The drinks reception took place in the Walled Garden before guests moved to the marquee for the wedding breakfast and speeches. With live music throughout the meal, the energy was electric and spontaneous dancing broke out before dessert had even been served.
Cocktail hour kept the celebrations going with a DJ and sax player performing as the cake was cut. Everyone then returned to the Fig House for the first dance before a surprise fireworks display lit up the evening sky. Glesni had arranged the display for Scott, who is a huge fireworks fan, and it was the perfect ending to a wonderfully upbeat wedding at Middleton Lodge Estate.
CREATING A UNIQUE MIDDLETON LODGE WEDDING FILM
Creating Glesni and Scott’s wedding film at Middleton Lodge involved using many of the storytelling techniques used in cinema. Scott, the groom, is a funny and engaging person, and I wanted his personality to shine through, so I opened the film with a misdirect. I like to use this at the beginning of a film because wedding films can sometimes take themselves too seriously. Scott’s opening comments lead you to think the film will follow a familiar path before revealing his comic timing and starting with laughter.
Having set the tone for the wedding in the first 40 seconds, I then needed to build towards the ceremony. Because I was able to film both Scott and Glesni’s preparations, I had plenty of footage to create a sequence using one of my favourite cinematic devices, the match cut. I initially introduce Scott and his groomsmen before we see Glesni and her dress. I then begin a series of subtle match cuts, starting with Glesni framed on the right side of the screen in front of the window, cutting to Scott in the same screen position.
I then cut back from Scott to Glesni using screen space again, before moving into a hand to hand cut, tying items, a shot of the groomsmen getting ready as a group, and the bride and bridesmaids doing the same thing, framed in a similar way. Using screen position again allowed me to move smoothly from Glesni back to Scott.
At this point, I was happy that the morning build up had been established and we moved into the ceremony as the music began to rise in tempo. As the strings started, the guests stood and I showed Scott turning around to see Glesni. I had intentionally held back from showing Glesni in her full dress. I wanted that moment to have maximum impact, so I delayed it further by cutting to one of my favourite shots as Glesni and her father walked across the rear camera.
BEHIND THE SCENES EDITING MAGIC
This shot not only builds anticipation, but it also involved a huge amount of work behind the scenes. I was standing at the top of the aisle and wanted to remove myself from the frame. I spent hours editing the clip, keyframing and masking frame by frame.
It was technically challenging because Glesni’s father walked in front of me, so I had to remove myself around that movement and then rebuild the background when Glesni and her father moved centrally and I appeared again behind them.
This was a huge amount of editing time and effort, all to create a seamless moment that feels completely natural on screen. It is this level of care and attention I bring to my wedding films, and I love how well the shot works once finished.
Scott’s more heartfelt words then narrate this section as the film builds towards the first kiss.
The confetti and fireworks gave me the perfect opportunity to use another match cut, jumping from the daytime celebrations to the evening party. The firework explosion was timed to the peak of the song to elevate the momentum of the film. I then used a cross fade between the dance floor and the fireworks as a subtle metaphor for the excitement and happiness in Glesni and Scott’s lives at that moment.
There was a lot of subtle editing work throughout this film, and much of it will never be noticed consciously. Every shot was carefully considered and placed for its storytelling impact, helping the film flow naturally while visual match cuts allowed me to move between scenes without it ever feeling jarring for the viewer.
WHY MIDDLETON LODGE IS PERFECT FOR WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY
Middleton Lodge Estate is an exceptional venue for documentary wedding videography because every part of the estate has been beautifully designed and flows naturally throughout the day. From the elegant Georgian interiors of the Main House to the modern styling of the Fig House, every space feels refined, stylish and full of character.
The light at Middleton Lodge Estate is one of its standout features. Large windows, bright interiors and open outdoor spaces allow me to film naturally and unobtrusively while creating cinematic images that still feel honest and real.
The grounds also offer incredible variety for your wedding film. Walled gardens, sweeping countryside, tree lined driveways and beautiful architecture all create opportunities for stunning footage without ever needing to leave the estate.
I have filmed a number of weddings at Middleton Lodge Estate, with ceremonies in the Fig House, the Main House and local church services. I know how to use each part of the venue to create beautiful, story led wedding films that feel personal to every couple.
