Thirsk Lodge Barns Wedding Videographer | James Tracey
As a Yorkshire wedding videographer, I’ve really enjoyed seeing more superb venues open up in North Yorkshire. Ever since I started working in the wedding industry, I felt that North Yorkshire was a bit of an untapped gold mine for wedding venues. With rugged scenery, beautiful buildings, historic locations, and warm, friendly people, I always felt the county should have more top-class venues than it did. As a Yorkshireman myself, I wanted more opportunities to return to my home county to film weddings.
Then, around 2019, something changed. Yorkshire seemed to realise it could be the perfect county to get married in. New venues started to appear across the county, offering a wider range of styles than previously available. Located just outside the market town of Thirsk, between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, Thirsk Lodge Barns officially opened in 2021 as a wedding venue. It’s a beautiful mix of classic Yorkshire barn and a contemporary event space. It achieves the rare quality of feeling cosy and personal, yet being spacious enough to bring all your favourite people together for your marriage celebration.. As a Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding videographer, it’s an absolute dream to film at.
Every wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns is a chance to tell a unique story for each couple. I focus on cinematic storytelling, capturing genuine moments, the laughter, tears, and joy, while letting the day unfold naturally. My style and ethos are very clear: unobtrusive, natural storytelling. You won’t find me staging moments or setting up shots. I want your film to be unique to you. Using multiple angles during the marriage ceremony and the speeches, alongside drone footage, I create cinematic wedding films that tell your story. Have a look at Carly and Matt’s wedding film in the video above to see what I mean.
Why Thirsk Lodge Barns is a Great Wedding Venue
Thirsk Lodge Barns is an exclusive-use wedding venue, set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside just outside Thirsk. The benefit of it being an exclusive-use venue is that you know the entire venue and accommodation will be reserved for you and your family for your celebrations. The venue itself has been designed to work perfectly as a modern wedding venue. The layout has a considered flow, with every area connecting thoughtfully to the next. Your guests will move effortlessly from the bar to The Main Barn and then out into the spectacular Courtyard. It’s easy to overlook how much of a positive impact this has on your wedding day. Guests will easily be able to navigate the venue, and each space has been designed to accommodate large numbers of guests without feeling too large or too small. From a videography perspective, the venue has all the elements required to make a great wedding film. Beautiful light, rustic features, space for my cameras and great sounding audio. I can guarantee that I will create a beautiful video at every wedding I film.
your marriage ceremony in the main BARN
The Main Barn is the perfect place to get married at the venue. Fully licensed for civil ceremonies, it can seat up to 140 guests. Wooden beams, fairy lights, and exposed brick all highlight the rustic and stylish design of the barn. With large glass windows, the room is filled with natural, directional light, which is ideal for creating flattering lighting when filming your service. The windows overlook a grass field filled with wildflowers, leaning into the natural, rustic style of the venue. The Main Barn also has a mezzanine level where live music performers can perform during your ceremony. The mezzanine also offers an alternative angle to set up another video camera, allowing for a more unique perspective as you walk up the aisle. The Main Barn is a fantastic space for sound too, with a really clean acoustic environment that makes the audio I capture from the vows, readings, and registrar sound amazing for your wedding film.
The Main Barn is also where the evening reception will take place. This room is transformed after your marriage ceremony has concluded. This happens in the background whilst you and your guests enjoy cocktails in the bar or Courtyard. Your evening entertainment can arrive and set up without disruption or delay, as you won’t be using The Main Barn throughout the day. This is something unique to the venue, showcasing excellent design that allows the space to flow seamlessly during your wedding. Delays due to longer speeches can impact evening receptions at other venues, but at Thirsk Lodge Barns, everything will be set up and ready for your evening celebrations, even if there are delays earlier in the day.
CONFETTI IN THE COURTYARD
Adjacent to the Main Hall is the Bar and Courtyard. It is simply beautiful and an incredible space for wedding videography, especially for capturing natural, relaxed moments like confetti and the drinks reception. This area works perfectly whether you have a sunny day or the more traditional British rain and cloud. The bar features a huge full-length window wall that can open out to the Courtyard. A stylish mix of exposed wooden beams and brickwork sits alongside a modern copper-topped bar, linking the historic barn with the contemporary area of the venue, an effortless transition from old to new that works beautifully.
The Courtyard itself is simply stunning, with a 200-year-old Spanish olive tree in the centre, which adds to the Mediterranean feel of the space. Sheltered from the wind, the Courtyard is guaranteed to remain in the sun all day and is the perfect spot for your confetti. With beautiful light and stylish surroundings, filming the confetti looks amazing, and it is one of the best moments of the day for me as a Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding videographer.
FILMING SPEECHES IN the dining room
The Dining Room is a stunning space for your wedding breakfast and speeches. Skylights, large windows, and solid oak floors complement the exposed brickwork and maintain the stylish, rustic vibe of Thirsk Lodge Barns throughout the entire venue. As with the whole venue, the guest experience has been carefully considered, and the dining room even has its own bar. From 2027, Thirsk Lodge Barns will manage all catering with their in-house team. With a farm-to-fork ethos, they will grow as much as possible on the estate and source as much local produce as possible, keeping sustainability and quality at the heart of the dining experience.
One of the standout features of the venue is its relaxed approach to dining, with tapas, feasts, and sides passed around to create a lovely, informal atmosphere. In my opinion, this is far more fun as a guest and perfectly suits a wedding celebration. Filming the wedding speeches in The Dining Room is fantastic. There is so much space that I can set up my cameras and remain out of the way of guests while still capturing the best angles of the speakers, top table, and guest reactions. With dedicated audio, I can easily record your entire speeches from the house microphone, allowing you to enjoy the best moments over and over again in your wedding film.
In addition to these areas, there is The Wheelhouse, a snug ideal for a quiet escape, somewhere for children to play, or a peaceful space for guests. The VIP Room is a private space for the couple, perfect for meeting the registrar or having a quiet moment together. It also provides direct access to the Main Hall through two grand wooden doors. The entire design has been carefully considered with the couple and guest experience in mind, and it really shows. Each space flows seamlessly into the next, making your day move effortlessly. This also helps my filming, as guests relax naturally and allows me to capture moments discreetly while they enjoy the day.
CINEMATIC THIRSK LODGE BARNS WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY
I love being a Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding videographer as it is such an easy venue to film weddings at. As I’ve mentioned, the thoughtful design really helps, with natural light in the Main Hall, Bar, and Dining Room creating beautifully lit scenes. I film in a discreet, natural way and rely on natural light to make my films look cinematic. Thirsk Lodge Barns works beautifully with directional light, allowing me to position my cameras for the most flattering angles. I avoid adding extra lighting and equipment, as it can get in the way of the day and slow things down, so having a venue that looks stunning naturally really helps my films look cinematic.
When the sun comes out, the Bar and Courtyard are bathed in glorious golden light all day. With glass, wood, and copper features, there are distinct colours, reflections, and creative opportunities for filming, all allowing me to capture unique and striking shots. Sunsets are particularly beautiful at Thirsk Lodge Barns, and if you’re fortunate enough to have one, we can create stunning footage during the golden hour. Golden hour is one of my favourite parts of any wedding. It’s dreamy, ethereal, and instantly makes any film look cinematic. There’s a reason Hollywood films key scenes at golden hour: it simply looks beautiful and flattering on your wedding film.
Aerial footage captured by my drones looks amazing, showcasing North Yorkshire at its best. Even if it rains or is cloudy, the venue still looks amazing. With so many windows and lovely diffused light, I can create stunning footage just as easily as if the sun were shining. Thirsk Lodge Barns is one of the rare venues that looks incredible in any weather condition.
