Thirsk Lodge Barns Wedding Videography // Carly & Matt
I’ve really enjoyed seeing more superb wedding venues open up in North Yorkshire. Ever since I started working in the wedding industry I felt that North Yorkshire was a bit of an untapped gold mine for wedding venues. Stunning scenery, beautiful buildings, warm and friendly locals. Yorkshire finally realised it could be a new home for top quality wedding venues in starting around 2019. Thirsk Lodge Barns officially opened in 2021 and another new venue joined the expanding roster of great venues in a great county. It’s a venue that feels cosy and personal, yet spacious enough to bring all your favourite people together, and as a wedding videographer, it’s a dream to film in.
Opened in 2021 on the Thirsk Lodge estate, the barns were designed with weddings in mind. Every space flows naturally to the next, the light is beautiful, and there’s a timeless feel that means your video will look just as good in 20 years’ time as it does on the day.
Epic Low Cloud
Carly and Matt’s wedding took place in October and the day started off with typical Yorkshire weather, low cloud and dark skies. However there is a benefit to low cloud, getting the drone up meant i could fly in the cloud and it looks epic! With the drone flying restrictions it’s often impossible to fly high enough to get into the clouds, but this wedding was not a problem and it helped create a moody and epic start to Carly and Matt’s film.
Beautiful Autumnal Light
Preparation for both Carly and Matt were held on Thirsk Lodge Barn Estate, relaxed and informal, it was easy to jump between both Carly and Matt to cover their build up to the wedding. The Ceremony was held in the barn itself and right after the first kiss, the low cloud cleared and beautiful autumnal sun broke through. Perfect timing for the drinks reception that was then held in the courtyard at Thirks Lodge Barns. Autumnal sun is beautiful for wedding videography, it makes every shot look warm and soft and my style of videography means I often choose to shoot into the light and through the many windows at Thirks Lodge Barns to get an extra bit of flare on the shots.
Fantastic speeches followed before the wedding breakfast and then into the evening reception. I absolutely loved filming at Thirks Lodge Barns, the venue is thoughtfully designed, with great light and stylish decor. I’ve already been booked to return to Thirks Lodge Barns in 2026 and I cannot wait to film in the summer and get a different look and feel to my wedding film.
Why Thirsk Lodge Barns is a Great Wedding Venue
The Ceremony Barn at Thirsk Lodge Barn, has a lovely sense of warmth thanks to the red brick and original beams. It’s incredibly photogenic and gives your wedding film a grounded, intimate mood during the vows. Whether you’re having live music, acoustic strings or a personal reading, the acoustics here make everything feel richer and more emotional.
And importantly there’s room to move. This allows me to film from multiple angles without being distracting, capturing your reactions (and your guests’) naturally.
The Courtyard for Drinks, Confetti & Golden Hour
Once the confetti flies (and yes, this courtyard is perfect for a confetti moment), your guests naturally spill into the Courtyard and surrounding lawns.
This is where some of the most joyful footage of the day is captured. And when the sun begins to dip? The surrounding fields provide some of the best golden hour footage anywhere in Yorkshire. We slip away for 10–15 minutes, just the two of you. No posing. Just time to breathe, walk, talk and be together – and that’s where the most emotional, real footage comes from.
The Main Barn is bright and spacious with high ceilings and open beams – perfect for dinner and speeches. Because of the layout and lighting, speeches look amazing here. Whether they’re hilarious, heartfelt or both, this is where storytelling really starts to come alive in your wedding film.
The Evening Barn is designed with celebrations in mind. The atmosphere is always brilliant, and once the band or DJ kicks off, the energy lifts instantly.
Why I Love Filming at Thirsk Lodge Barns
To put it simply:
- Beautiful natural light
- Spaces that flow perfectly throughout the day
- Plenty of variety for filming (without needing to travel anywhere)
- A relaxed, welcoming feel that encourages real emotion
When a venue helps people feel at ease, the film writes itself. If you’re planning your wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns and you’re looking for a cinematic, story led wedding film that focuses on real connection and natural moments, I’d love to hear about your plans.
